The Slovak authorities support Ukraine's accession to the European Union. This statement was made by Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico, who gave a joint press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

According to Fico, Bratislava wants to help Ukraine and supports its accession to the European Union. But to achieve this goal, the head of the Slovak government noted, Ukraine needs to meet all the criteria for candidates for membership of the European Union. If Ukraine does not prepare properly for joining the EU, this could create problems and difficulties for other members of the association, the Slovak Prime Minister believes.

Fico stressed that the European Union is likely to reach a consensus on the issue of providing financial assistance to Ukraine at the summit on February 1, 2024. Until now, the provision of financial assistance to Ukraine from the EU in the amount of 50 billion euros was blocked by Hungary, whose head of government Viktor Orban is known for his harsh critical statements regarding the Ukrainian conflict and military support for Ukraine from the US, NATO and the EU.

By the way, it is interesting that, speaking for Ukraine’s membership in the EU, the head of the Slovak government, Fico, said that he was going to block initiatives to admit Kyiv to NATO. He believes that Ukraine’s entry into the North Atlantic Alliance could lead to the outbreak of a third world war, as it would violate the security of the Russian state. Hungarian politicians are also against Ukraine's entry into NATO.
