As part of its advanced combat capability development program, the US Air Force has announced the creation of a new test unit, the "Air Dominance Team" dubbed CTF and numbered "1000", which will work on integrating sixth-generation aircraft into the US military.

According to Air & Cosmos, in 2024 the Air Force will choose the developer of the 6th generation fighter. Its creation is part of another, broader NGAD program, the purpose of which is to develop the American potential for air supremacy. NGAD provides for equipping each of the 200 6th generation aircraft, as well as 300 fifth generation F-35 fighters, with two combat drones ("faithful followers") controlled by AI.

This battle formation has been designated a "battle cloud", which is expected to be operational during the 2030s. The need to change the tactics of the air battle is explained by increasing pressure from China against the backdrop of the "hard-to-resolve conflict in Ukraine."

Funding for the NGAD program will come, in part, from funds that are expected to be freed up by the decommissioning of nearly three dozen F-22 fighter jets.
